Answering One of Our FAQs

Pack Nine News - The Official Newsletter of Nevada Men's Golf

Nevada Men’s Golf Supporters,

One of the most common questions we get from players and fans alike is “how do you determine the lineup for tournaments?” Below is a breakdown of the method to our madness.

Our framework is designed to do three things:

1: Reward players for quality results. Just like top finishes reward you in professional golf, playing well will earn you additional opportunities on our team. We also reward for team finishes and not just individual finishes at each event.

2: Provide opportunities for players to breakthrough at any point during the season regardless of play to date. Our team is only as strong as our weakest link. Whether you are the top ranked player or you haven’t played in a tournament all season, each player participates in Q-School with the chance to earn an exemption. Think of it as our version of the Monday Qualifier.

3: Incentivize a player-led culture. 4 of the 5 spots on the team are out of the coaches hands each week. The players are the ones who decide who competes for us in tournaments, and the onus is on them to hold each other accountable.

We accomplish the above by creating four opportunities for players to earn “Exemptions” into the lineup:

1: Team or Individual Finish at a Tournament

  • If our team finishes in the top third of the field, the low 4 players earn an Exemption.

  • If our team finishes in the top half of the field, the low 3 players earn an Exemption.

  • If our team finishes in the top two-thirds of the field, the low 2 players earn an Exemption.

  • If our team finishes in the top three-fourths of the field, the low player earns an Exemption.

  • If a player wins as an individual, they earn two Exemptions.

  • If a player finishes in the top 10% of an individual-only tournament, they earn an Exemption.

2: Q-School Rounds at Home

  • The number of Exemptions available is less than or equal to the number of rounds played, i.e., if we play 3 rounds, a maximum of 3 Exemptions will be available.

3: Coaches Pick

  • One coaches pick will play the 5th spot at each event. This acts as a wildcard for situations where players get sick or injured, have an unforeseen tough finish, etc.

4: Player-Only Vote

  • If the above criteria do not produce a total of 5 Exemptions, any remaining spots will be determined by a player-only vote. Each player on the team will anonymously rank the remaining players, and the total results will fill the remaining spots in order.
